Adecco MVP BEFC Lions vs JETRO - Atsushi Nakamura

  • Adecco BEFC Most Valuable Player vs JETRO - Atsushi Nakamura

BEFC Lions went onto their cup debut knowing that this was a chance to test new players, a new formation and have a game to tinker around with problems (a chance they had not really had since the start of the season). The door was opened for people who were keen to join or start playing to get some game time, and so they did with new comers Jeremy, Richard and Atsushi having an outstanding game that got them plaudits from all members.

Although initially worried over the poor weather and lack of players, Lions knew this was a game to get used to each other, introduce new members and test how we could fare against a solid Div 2 Team. With GK duties shared between Seth, who's coming back from an injury and Jaime who had a solid game on goal, BEFC tested out a new backline led by Atsushi, accompanied by Reece and Jojo. Unfortunately a hit to the ankle had Jojo out of commission (we hope he recovers soon) in what was our first in-game injury of the year.

In the midfield Mark and newcomers Jeremy and Richard kept control of the midfield, with Rich earning the nickname "Scholes" through his great distribution and Jeremy encouraging his team and fighting for any ball going through the midfield. Using strength to get rid of the fast running attackers from Jetro, they seldom had a chance. It was only during a counter attack that they managed to break past Lions:however, encouraged by their vice captain Kaz's constant attacking and movement, along with trial player Yusuke Endo's smooth dribbling, it was Jetro that was often found defending and struggling. A small distraction in the second half resulted in the second goal, which despite Jaime's photo worthy dive snuck into the left top corner. After that the Lions decided to focus on trying out different formations and giving people a chance to test themselves in different roles with more freedom to attack. This opened the game up for more counters, but also put a lot of pressure on Jetro who were physically exhausted and begging for the ref to end the game all throughout the last 20 minutes.

Atsushi Nakamura stood out as a leader in defense and played strongly whilst commanding those around him to ensure that BEFC was always ready to attack and that Jetro had a nightmare of a game. For his strong play, leadership and impressive understanding of positioning, Atsushi Nakamura is the Lions MVP for this game.
