Adecco MVP BEFC vs Pumas - Tsukasa Katase

  • Adecco BEFC Most Valuable Player - Tsukasa Katase

Since the Tokyo Metropolis League started 15 years ago BEFC had only been in the Cup final once! 15 years ago at the TML's birth under the alias 'Perfidious Albion'. So it was time for some history in the making against a very strong and still upcoming Pumas FC who had lost the final the previous year to perrenial Champions Hibernian. BEFC had hoped for a full strength squad but even with a few key players unavailable they could field a strong line up, with other members of the club also out to support from the side-lines!

Sadly it was not going to be a day of making history as BEFC quickly went behind to early set pieces from a very well organised and intense opponent. Clearly Pumas wanted this more than BEFC and it showed. Likely to missing out to Hibernian last year fired up Pumas the way missing promotion two season's before did to BEFC. The timing of the goals was unfortunate as BEFC looked to last out the early pressure, but it was also a surprise that Pumas' threats came from set pieces and long ball tactics when they are known largely for slick inter passing play and open running. In the second half BEFC faired much better, with some tactical changes and a stronger desire to compete. However the early shock of intensity had already done enough damage.

There was no shame in losing the cup but huge disappointed felt. Pumas are a very good side, are a proper TML team and turned up with a massive desire to win. The disappointment for BEFC was to concede from set pieces, rather than be outclassed in open play and a feeling that they capable of a better performance which they were unable to switch on until it was too late.

It was a tough call for Adecco MVP because many players felt they could have given more, and nominations fell strongly for a player who gave every part of their 100% trying to change the game around. Tsukasa Katase put in a huge performance, especially in the second half when moved to right midfield as his perpetually sought and fought to spark the comeback, attacking their defence relentlessly. By the end of the match he was physically and emotionally spent having given everything he had to try and turn the game around with true samurai (and bulldog) spirit.

For a great performance, huge impact in changing the direction of the match in the second half and especially for laying out everything in a never say die pursuit of a comeback, Tsukasa Katase of the Adecco BEFC Most Valuable Player for the FJC Cup Final versus Pumas FC.
