Adecco MVP BEFC Lions vs Oakwood Clash - Naoki Tanabe

  • Adecco BEFC Most Valuable Player vs Clash - Naoki Tanabe

On the back of a three-match unbeaten run, and after defeating Clash 2-0 in the Plate, the Lions entered this match full of confidence.

Indeed, that confidence paid off in the first half with club captain Ben and Lions vice-captain Kaz combining perfectly up top to score the goals. The first goal came courtesy of a saved header from Ben, which was acrobatically scissor-kicked in by Kaz.

In the second half, the Lions extended their lead after a fantastic through-ball from Naoki finished by Ben. And to make it 3-0, Kaz scored his second of the game after superbly finishing a through-ball from Lions captain Viran.

The Lions had never been 3-0 up before, and the team learnt a valuable lesson... There is no room for complacency, especially when there are dubious decisions made by the ref.

Vice-captain Mark had to be withdrawn after receiving a slide tackle from behind which should have warranted a red-card... And the first goal was made after the ball was kicked out of the keeper's hands.

Momentum had shifted, and Lions heads went down. Clash managed to equalise after two lucky goals from set-pieces.

There was one player fighting on and on, and that was Naoki. He took a yellow for the team for defending players against the inconsistent ref, and drove the attacking play from midfield with his vision and deft passing.

That is why Naoki is this game's Adecco MVP.

Honourable mentions go to Kaz who is now the Lions top-scorer after scoring 3 goals in the last 2 games; Ben who led the front-line well and was involved in 2 goals; Nils for excellent defending to help ensure that no goals were conceded from open-play.

Going forward, the Lions need to sort out their problem with defending set-pieces, and need to be sure to never take their foot off the gas no matter how many goals up they are.
