Adecco MOM BEFC vs Lions FJ Cup - Timothy Witvliet

  • Adecco BEFC Man of the Match Award - Timothy Witvliet

BEFC starred in a Halloween horror story as an irregular away team were put beyond the grave by a full strength rampaging Lions. It shows the competiveness of Division 2, but also that you have to stand up, take your punishment and come back stronger. And this decided the deeply discussed decision of MOM.
Recovering from an early catastophic moment which led to the first goal, Tim sucked it up and put in a massive shift as not only as the striking threat and putting the teeth in the midfield, but even tracking back and turning up in his own box to take out a runner almost through on goal (from striker!). Aside from the early unforgiving error (perhaps possessed by the ghost of BEFC past), he clearly stood out up front and in midfield as wanting it more than anyone, getting stuck into opposition, creating chances, going direct on defenders and this perfomance was keenly complimented by teammates afterwards. Tim never gave up, and when things went against him he came back even harder. This fighter's spirit is already in Tim's game but in this match it noticeably fuelled his stand out performance making Tim Witvliet Adecco BEFC Man of the Match.

This match was brutal, but we have to accept our beating and use it as a lesson to consider why it happened both on a team and individual level. While being out of the Cup and entering the Plate is good for us - it shouldn't happen like that. Lions are a good team, the tightness between teams in Division 2 is very close that even the slightest imbalance or drop in intensity or focus will lose a game - and that showed. One big takeaway versus Lions is that they are a very physical team and we got bullied. We've always set up to play against this aspect of their game before. It shows just how important aggression, intensity and physicality are to playing in the league at this level.

Let's be honest and not make excuses so we can improve and become better. We had an opportunity to try out what might work and what might not. We found out largely what doesn't. This might sound a little ghoulish, but while this match was horrible it is not necessarily a terrible thing.
