Adecco BEFC MVP vs FC Sagarmatha - Joseph Humphreys

  • Adecco BEFC MVP vs FC Sagarmatha - Joseph Humphreys

In a first time to match up against each other BEFC faced FC Sagarmatha where a BEFC win would be crucial for them going equal points with division leaders SUNS. BEFC Lions however had played Sagarmatha the previous season and so Embassy FC (BEFC) had a fair bit of knowledge about the type of opponent they'd be facing. Starting with a full squad Embassy were soon down to 14 players as the flu season struck down Sakk and Pounder. The mantra of always picking a full squad in case of disaster proved worthy again, with other players getting more opportunity to soak up more match time and impress.

BEFC started brightly, with perhaps the warm up game assisting the back line in some rather fine build up play which when transitioned had FC Sagarmatha pinned into their own half for quite long periods. With the pressure sustained and counter-attacks swiftly taken care of BEFC went ahead with a beautiful through ball to Takahashi who slipped his marker and finished from close range. BEFC continued to dominate and almost took the 'Olé Olé' factor a little two far in a flowing move that resulted in about 4 passes around the 6 yard box before finally someone deciding to shoot -- only to miss the target. Sagarmatha started to show more threat after the player rotations caused some confusion and the same level of midfield defensive dominance allowed Sagarmatha to gain more sucess from their counter attacks. In almost a repeat of last week, albeit against a much stronger opponent, BEFC nearly were punished on the counter right before half time were it not for some galant defending from the overwhelmed back-line and a great save from Sasada.

The second half started well again. BEFC returning to the good build up play they started with and not playing over-attacking, allowing the lines of defence to be closer and forcing Sagarmatha to try and play through - where they would lose the ball much more easily. However as the game went on, Sagarmatha rightly threw more players forward overloading their attack, which BEFC were not initially aware to take notice of. This meant when an attack broke down, Sagarmatha had a player advantage on the counter. Again the defence did a great job dealing with this and BEFC with some good communication continued to dominate the play. Sagarmatha really resorting to try and expose the space behind BEFC with their fast players and long balls.
About 10 minutes before the final whistle FC Sagamatha's player, likely frustrated from being denied the ball each time by the BEFC midfield tackles inexplicably chose to headbutt Yuki Endo, and then put a trachea choke Joseph Humphries before being dismissed by the referee.

With 10 men Sagarmatha through caution to the wind and went all out for the attack. They were held in check and BEFC were unlucky not to finish the game off with a few more goals from good counter-attack moves. And thus it ended 1 - 0 to BEFC and the vital points claimed. While the scoreline could have been 4 - 0, it was a game of good play, some great moves and really despite 10 minutes before half time a match fully dominated by BEFC. When it came to MVP nominations the vast majority went to a player who bossed the midfield, proected the back-line and drove the team to perform leading by example. Narrowly missing out last match's MVP, Joseph Humphreys put in another stella performance to make some claim to be the Kante of BEFC (when played in the right position ;) ) - with bonus respect for staying restrained when Caraffo chose to grab him by the throat.

In a match full of strong performances, resoluteness and all round good play the Adecco BEFC Most Valuable Player vs FC Sagarmatha is Joseph Humpreys.
